The Payment Card Industry and its Post Quantum Security

In the coming years, organizations will be able to use quantum computing to conduct operations too complex for today's computers. Experts predict quantum will vastly speed and expand payment card industry (PCI) business processes ... but it will also make all classical public key cryptography vulnerable to attack.

To help PCI stakeholders prepare, FS-ISAC's Post Quantum Cryptography Working Group published business guidance for leaders and three companion use case papers for practitioners. Together, the four papers cover:

  • PCI cryptography that may be vulnerable to quantum, organized by use case and entity
  • Discussion of key hardware and software components and the considerations that arise from quantum computing in the industry
  • Use cases in the financial sector
  • Potential concerns related to infrastructure and the life cycle of payment card
    processing
  • Standards and quantum-specific cryptographic implementations related to
    payment cards

The threat to PCI leaders and suppliers is not immediate, but it is urgent. Fill out the form to download all four papers:

  1. The Impact of Quantum Computing on the Payment Card Industry
  2. PCI Use Cases: Card Provisioning Setup and Cardholder Data Provisioning
  3. PCI Use Cases: Transaction Routing and Authorization and Retail Transaction Detail and Routing
  4. PCI Use Cases: ATM and POS Card Capture and ATM and POS Setup With Backend Acquiring Systems
